Are your birds ready to welcome a new season with a brand new living arrangement? Let’s all MARCH into springtime and talk about cages! Shopping for a new bird cage doesn’t have to be a nightmare. In fact, it can be fun with the right retailer. Bird Cages 4 Less invites you to grab your morning mug, and cozy up with your companion parrot to read our March Cage Series. Throughout the month of March, join us to explore the many options we have to offer for your special feathered friend.

Today, we’re going to talk about the playtop cage for the smallest parrots. It’s important to provide even the littlest members of our families with a suitably large space that fits their larger-than-life personalities. Parrotlets and lovebirds are two of the smallest species you see- but we’re also including American and English budgies, cockatiels, Indian and African ringneck parakeets, Green cheek conures, in all their many colors, and their similar-in-size cousins such as the Maroon belly, Black capped, Fire shouldered, and Pearly conures. Finches, canaries, and other small songbirds can also be included in this category, even though they are not parrots!

Considering bar spacing with any bird is crucial to providing a safe environment for your feathered friend. Parrots, and birds in general, are curious and mischievous animals especially when left alone. In a cage with bar spacing which is too large, a bird could poke their head through and become trapped, resulting in serious injury! So, above all else, always ensure that your cage has appropriate bar spacing for any sized parrot in your home. Proper spacing for very small birds such as the parrotlet, budgie, lovebird, finch, and canary is 1/2 inch, with spacing no larger than 5/8 inch. This rule also applies to slightly larger birds such as cockatiels, green cheek conures, and ringnecks, except 5/8 inch spacing is preferred. While a cage may seem appealing because it is larger, more decorative, or even more affordable, if it has an inappropriate bar spacing for your particular parrot, you’re taking a big risk. But – thankfully – we have you covered at Bird Cages 4 Less. We have a wide selection of cages to suit both your parrot, and your tastes!

Your bird is colorful, boisterous, and quite a sight to be seen. Give them a cage that not only compliments their tenacious personality, but blends seamlessly with your living room decor. The Papa Pad Convertible Top cage comes in a range of colors to do just that! This cage is the perfect home for our smaller friends with little beaks, and little feet, because it has 1/2 inch bar spacing. So, if you have a green cheek conure, cockatiel, parrotlet, lovebird, American or English budgie, or even a family of finches, this is a perfect cage for you. A cage shouldn’t just be beautiful – of course – it also has to be functional. Luckily, the Papa Pad comes with a stand and storage shelf, 2 feeder doors, a removable seed catcher, and a convertible top! The top of the cage opens, you pop the perch into place, and viola- an instant play area for your active parrot. When your bird is safely secured inside (because this cage has a bird-proof latch!), he’ll enjoy the plentiful space to stretch his wings as this cage is 22 inches wide by 18 inches deep by 33 inches high inside. And, since the interior is so roomy, you’re free to add a variety of perches, several fun toys, and even extra treat cups.

But, what if you have a pair or trio of long-tailed, little birds? It isn’t uncommon to have a pair of green cheek (or similar sized) conures, Indian or African ringneck parakeets, or even a few lovely cockatiels in the same family. Unlike other small parrots like the parrotlet or lovebird, parakeets and conures have exceptionally long tails that must be considered when shopping for a new cage – especially when they’re living together! No need to worry, though, as we’re one step ahead of you.

Similar in shape to the Papa Pad is the Palama Place Playtop cage, and it has many of the same features – colorful choices, 1/2 inch bar spacing, removable seed catchers, an included stand with storage, and 2 feeder doors. However, it is 27.5 inches wide by 21.5 inches deep by 33 inches tall inside. This is perfect for pairs and trios as it has enough additional space to let them sit apart and still be able to enjoy multiple perches, toys, and food cups. And, when your curious conure duo tries to team up to escape the cage, they’ll be disappointed to see the bird-proof latches on all doors. The Palama Place also has a decorative pattern around the waist of the cage to make it truly unique – just like your little birds.

These two bird cages, however, are of a similar style – they’re convertible tops. They’re great if you don’t mind “setting up” and “breaking down” every time your bird is out to play. But, what if you work from home and are interested in a more permanent play area for your Cockatiel Office Assistant? We still have options for you! The Pili Pad Playtop cage offers a sturdy cage that will last a lifetime – as well as a fun, permanent playtop with two feeder cups! The playtop has two arching ladders to allow even the clumsiest of conures to make full use of the included perch and cups. Another bonus: clean up is a snap with a slide-out tray! Just line it with newspaper, or your chosen cage substrate, and toss in a couple foot toys to keep your friend busy while you get some work done. The Pili Pad is best suited as a single-bird home with 5/8 inch bar spacing, and size of 18 inch wide by 18 inch deep by 23 inch high inside. This would make a great cage for a conure, cockatiel, or ringneck who gets plenty of exercise on the playtop. While the interior is spacious, that is quickly eaten up by extra perches and toys.

For something just a little larger, but with smaller bar spacing, consider the Avian Adventures Nina cage. In addition 2 inches on the width, the Nina cage has 1/2 inch bar spacing and features a toy hook on the permanent playtop to add to your bird’s excitement! However, the biggest bonus is in the design of the cage itself. Avian Adventures cages pop together with no nuts, no bolts, and no screws. These cages assemble quickly and breakdown easily for storage, or travel.

Or are you looking to add something a little more basic without skimping on great features? The Kiko Kondo Playtop cage has everything you and your little bird need! With sliding feeder doors, a pull-out tray for easy cleaning, and a convertible top with perch, this little cage is amazing without being flashy. Allow your bird’s colors and song to be the center of attention – rather than the cage. Your fiesty, tiny dynamo will appreciate that this cage is large enough to spread his wings and have a toy or two; 16 inches deep by 16 inches wide by 23 inches tall makes it great for parrotlets, lovebirds, and American or English budgies. Unlike the Papa Pad cage, however, the Kiko Kondo has 5/8 inch bar spacing – so you may want to skip this particular model for your finch and canary friends.
