America celebrates the Fourth of July each year with food, fun and, of course, fireworks! While you’re out having fun, don’t forget about your bird. How well do you know your bird? Do loud noises or flashes of light upset your bird? Loud noises and bright flashes of light can stress out most birds. Follow these tips to keep your bird as stress-free as possible.
- Know Your Bird
Some birds, like Amazon parrots, are totally unfazed by the sounds of fireworks and even get excited with the festivities. Other birds, such as African grey parrots and cockatoos tend to be a little more wary of what’s going on around them.
- Cover Up
Move your pet bird to a room where the windows can be covered, or cover its cage. Bright lights from fireworks can frighten your bird just as much as the sound. Provide a tent for your pet bird to hide in.
- Play Music
Turn on calm, soothing music to drown out the noise from fireworks. Choose a song that your bird relaxes to.
- Board Your Pet Bird
Consider boarding your pet bird for the evening at a vet’s office or qualified avian store, away from areas where fireworks will be. While your bird is there, it might make a few friends!
- Remain Calm
If you’re worried or stressed, your pet bird will pick up on it and add to its own stress. If your bird is stressed during fireworks, remain calm.
- See Your Avian Vet
If your bird is known for becoming overstressed because of loud noises, speak to your avian veterinarian. They may be able to recommend solutions to help keep your bird calm.
- Stay Indoors
Throughout the day, people might set off fireworks, so keep your pet bird inside, not only to prevent stress, but for safety reasons. If a pet bird is startled by the sound of a firework going off, it might fly away before you realize it.
Be kind to your bird during a fireworks display. Keep in mind, a stressed pet bird can become irritable and short-tempered, so be understanding. With these tips in mind, you and your pet bird will both have a great Fourth of July!
