As springtime goes into full swing, and we all have new bird cages to decorate, let’s shower our birds with new perches in April! We are not just bird cages at Bird Cages 4 Less. We have a great selection of perches in many different styles, and in every size you can imagine. So, invite your companion parrot to sit on your shoulder – his favorite perch – and learn something new about the perches your feathered friend should have!
Unless you’re a bird owner living in Brasil or the Congo where many of our feathered friends are native, you likely have a few chilly winter months every year. I live in the Northeastern United States and let me tell you – it snows, a lot! Ever since I adopted my first companion parrot, I’ve wondered what the best way to keep them warm was, and I’ve tried many different methods. Most of those trial and error methods involved jacking up my thermostat and sweating my non-feathered tush off in the middle of January!
I never knew that there was a simpler solution – but my friend ZuZu the Blue-crown Conure (pictured right) has been living the life for just about four years. Since Zuzu has plucked his feathers, his parront, Michelle B., wanted to make sure he stayed warm enough during winters in Virginia. So, she bought him the Thermo-Perch – a heated perch! These perches are made of non-toxic plastic, which is scratch and bite resistant, but may be a bit slippery for our uncoordinated feathered friends. The design of the perch keeps the electrical wire away from the bars – so you don’t have to worry about your curious caiques taking a chomp – and the perch is warmed by a very low 12 volt current. While Zuzu enjoys this perch because it keeps his naked belly toasty, it would also be great for older, arthritic birds who may enjoy the soothing warmth on their joints. Thermo-Perches are perfect for just-weaning parrots, as well, as they’re not fully feathered yet and they may need the extra warmth. The perch is silent, safe, and likely to be your parrot’s new favorite sleeping spot!
We recommend placing this perch in an area of the cage where you can easily plug the wire into an outlet, and secure the wire so it doesn’t hang near the bars. If one side of the cage tends to be cooler than the other due to something like light from a nearby window, it is likely best to place this perch on the cooler side! It is not recommended that you cover this perch with rope or bandage wrap as it may damage the perch when warmed. The Thermo-Perch comes in three sizes to suit nearly every parrot in your home!
Is your parrot also a fan of the Thermo-Perch? You can share your experiences and photos in the comments below. Don’t forget to check out our full selection of perches on our full site. We’re going to continue talking about the many varieties of perches we have to offer all April long, so we’ll see you again tomorrow!
